Emily Cumming Harris was one of New Zealand's first professional women painters. She chiefly painted New Zealand plants and flowers and worked mainly in water colour.
Harris exhibited her work in New Zealand and overseas, including exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, and London.
Although these exhibitions furthered her career as an artist and art teacher she clearly had mixed feelings about the process. An entry in her diary reads, 'I grow to love my pictures, and after I have worked & thought about & toiled at a picture for a long time I cannot endure the idea of perhaps some half drunken man, who coming into the Exhibition, pays 10/6 and maybe wins my picture.'
