Blood and Dirt, by Jared Davidson

Prison Labour and the Making of New Zealand

In Blood and Dirt, Jared Davidson reveals how prison labour helped shape New Zealand and its Pacific empire. Looking beyond the walls of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century prisons, he shows how penal practices played a central role in building the modern nation. From the Hohi mission station in the Bay of Islands to Milford Sound, vast forest plantations and Parliament itself, this vivid book offers a new way to see New Zealand’s history.
